Conflict in Stories: 4 Types and When Each One Causes Problems

A story without conflict is just a sequence of pleasant moments. Nobody finishes those.

The 4 conflict types writers use

Conflict in fiction generally falls into 4 categories: a character against another person, against nature or environment, against society or systems, and against themselves. Most stories mix at least 2 of these. A character might fight a corrupt institution while also doubting their own courage. That layering is what makes plot feel textured rather than thin.

Where each type adds value

  • Person vs. person creates immediate, visible tension readers can track easily
  • Person vs. self slows the pace in a useful way and deepens reader empathy
  • Person vs. society adds weight to stories about injustice or belonging
  • Person vs. nature works especially well in survival or isolation narratives

Where each type creates problems

  • Person vs. person can feel shallow if the antagonist has no understandable motivation
  • Person vs. self can stall plot momentum for chapters at a time
  • Person vs. society risks becoming a lecture rather than a story
  • Person vs. nature gets repetitive without internal conflict layered in

Identifying which conflict type is dominant in your story helps you diagnose pacing problems in under 30 minutes of structural review.
