Most playwrights only access dramaturgical feedback when an institution provides it. Between commissions, during development of speculative work, or when institutional relationships are unavailable, scripts often stall because there is no structured external pressure on them.
What dramaturgy actually does to a script
A working dramaturg asks questions the playwright is too close to ask. They identify where the play is withholding information the audience needs, where structural expectations are created but not fulfilled, and where the playwright is writing around a scene rather than through it.
These are diagnostic functions. They do not require a second person to perform them, but they do require a structured method.
A self-directed diagnostic sequence
- After completing a draft, wait at least eight days before reading it again.
- Read the script aloud alone, marking every line where you slow down or feel resistance. These are signals, not stylistic choices.
- Write a one-sentence statement of what each scene accomplishes structurally, separate from its emotional content. Any scene without a clear structural function is a candidate for revision or removal.
- Identify the three moments where the audience would most likely disengage. Write a paragraph explaining why each moment earns continued attention.
- Give the script to one reader with a specific question, not an open invitation for general feedback.
The discipline this requires
The process above takes roughly four hours spread across two weeks. Most playwrights skip it because it feels slower than just writing the next draft.
Skipping it is usually why the next draft has the same structural problems as the previous one.
